Galway Food Review: Guy’s Bar, Clifden

Located on Main Street in the heart of Clifden, Guy’s Bar is a beloved gastropub saturated with character and charm. With a food menu that celebrates fresh, local and honest ingredients, this is a must visit dining experience in Galway.

The ambiance is incredibly warm and inviting, while also emulating a genuine sense of high quality dining. The staff are incredibly kind and show true consideration for each guest. This compiled with the absolute excellent quality of food is what makes Guy’s Bar such a special dining experience.

The menu at Guy’s Bar is brimming with food from local Irish producers; Dooncastle Oysters, Kate’s Killary Mussels, and smoked salmon and seafood from Connemara Fisheries. Serving incredibly fresh and satiating food, Guy’s Bar excels on all standards.

What We Had

On our trip to Clifden, we came here for dinner and were greeted with the most amazing service and food. The Guys Seafood Skillet was an intoxicating platter of the freshest prawns, mussels and squid drenched in a bright tomato sauce - served with a side of buttery sourdough to sop up all the sauce, this was a beautiful dish that I’m still thinking about… I had the Seafood Skillet paired with a lovely vinho verde, a wine picked from Anke’s Choice. This is a selection of wine curated by Anke Hartmann, one of Ireland’s top sommeliers. The pairing was absolutely incredible; zingy, bright and a perfect choice for the evening.

The fish tacos we had were absolutely delicious. Resting on two corn tortillas, the flakey light fish was garnished with fresh flowered chives and coriander that was freshly picked that morning from the garden.

The gastropub also serves a light bites and lunch menu if you’re interested in a more casual bite to eat while exploring Clifden. We suggest trying their artisanal pizza. Their classic margherita pizza has a bright tomato base, with fior de lattee cheese, and fresh basil. Or if you’re looking for something more inventive, the Mountain Goat is adorned with pepperoni, Ardsallagh goats cheese, marinated onion, olive oil, all on their tomato base.
