Galway Dance Artist in Residence makes a RACKET

Now in her third year as Galway Dance Artist in Residence, Magdalena Hylak has developed a distinctive practice exploring the relationship between movement, sound, space and the audience. RACKET brings this work into a new ensemble piece, performed by four exceptional dancers: Ashley Chen, Isabella Oberlander, Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín, and Magdalena herself.

At its heart, RACKET explores the intensity of the connection between movement and sound.

In a world saturated with information, noise and the constant demand to respond, the work offers an alternative. Audiences are drawn into a quieter, immersive space where highly physical movement, music, lighting and sculptural, otherworldly costumes combine to create an experience that is both intense and intimate.

It is a work that asks audiences to slow down, listen, and experience what happens in the space between sound and movement.

Magdalena has worked nationally and internationally with some of the leading voices in contemporary dance, including Michael Keegan-Dolan, Liz Roche, Ríonach Ní Néill, Catherine Young, Emma Martin, John Scott and French choreographer Nacera Belaza, with whom she performed extensively across Europe and internationally.

RACKET has been developed through residencies at Dance Cork Firkin Crane and Dance Limerick, and brings together an international creative team including Magdalena's longtime collaborator and composer Lionel Kasparian, lighting designer Nicolas Vargelis, costume designer Alison Conneelly, dramaturg Eva Martinez, and producer Gwen Van Spyk.

Magdalena is also Dance Limerick's Associate Artist for 2026. Her work has been supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Galway City and County, Dance Ireland, Dance Limerick, Dance Cork Firkin Crane and Luail, Ireland's National Dance Company.
