Dare to Create: What’s on in Galway City for Cruinniú na nÓg

The National day of free creative activities for young people takes place this Saturday June 15th and there will be loads to do in Galway city. Explore the programme here...

Galway City Council and Youth Work Ireland Galway launched the Cruinniú na nÓg 2024 programme at a DJ workshop at Outset Gallery, Middle Street at the end of May. Young people were taking part in ‘Beats and Beyond’ DJ workshop with renowned DJ Laura O’Connell. The participants are learning the tricks of the trade before performing as part of a special ‘Cruinniú Lates’ event at Nun’s Island Theatre.

This year’s Cruinniú na nÓg - a day of free creative activity for young people - will take place on Saturday 15 June at various locations across the city. In collaboration with Youth Work Ireland Galway and Local Creative Youth Partnership, young people were asked what they would like to see and do for Cruinniú na nÓg. As a result, this programme was compiled to reflect the desires and interests of the young people of Galway City.

Highlights include cardboard furniture making workshops in Doughiska, Circus and dance in Shantalla and a live performance from Music Generation’s young singer and songwriters at the Druid’s Mick Lally Theatre. Libraries across the city will be a hive of activity, with a range of offerings, including a comic and graphic novel workshop at Ballybane Library, and ‘Music, Movement, and Markmaking’ for young children at Westside Library.

For the first time, this year’s programme will include late night events specially designed for young people aged 14-18. Cruinniú Lates includes ‘Scratch Night’ for performers of all art forms, whether music, poetry or circus, followed by a ‘Beats and Beyond’ set by the young DJs in training.

Mayor of Galway City, Councillor Eddie Hoare, launched the Cruinniú na nÓg programme and said; "Galway is a vibrant and diverse city, a cultural, creative, and inclusive city. Cruinniú na nÓg champions the creative potential of every child and allows children from across Galway city to come together to play, explore and discover. I want to encourage everyone to explore their creativity and to join in making Cruinniú na nÓg 2024 a day to remember."

Cruinniú na nÓg Local Ambassador Sonya Naumova, a dancer and a musician and member of Comhairle na nÓg (Galway City's Youth Council), said; "Creativity is like a magical tune that brings joy and connects us all, no matter who we are or where we come from."

Beidh clár bríomhar gníomhaíochtaí ealaíon agus ceardlanna cruthaitheacha do leanaí agus do dhaoine óga faoi 18 ar siúl Dé Sathairn an 15 Meitheamh.

Sheol Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe agus Obair d'Ógra Éireann Gaillimh clár Chruinniú na nÓg 2024 ag ceardlann DJ i nGailearaí Outset, An tSráid Láir Dé Máirt an 21 Bealtaine. Bhí daoine óga ag glacadh páirte i gceardlann DJ 'Beats and Beyond' leis an DJ cáiliúil Laura O'Connell. Tá cleasanna na ceirde á bhfoghlaim ag na rannpháirtithe sula gcasann siad mar chuid d'ócáid speisialta 'Cruinniú Lates' in Amharclann Nun's Island.

Beidh Cruinniú na nÓg na bliana seo—lá de ghníomhaíocht chruthaitheach saor in aisce do dhaoine óga—ar siúl Dé Sathairn an 15 Meitheamh in áiteanna éagsúla ar fud na cathrach. I gcomhar le Obair d'Ógra Éireann Gaillimh agus Comhpháirtíocht Áitiúil Óige Chruthaitheach, fiafraíodh de dhaoine óga cad ba mhaith leo a fheiceáil agus a dhéanamh do Chruinniú na nÓg. Mar thoradh air sin, cuireadh an clár seo le chéile chun mianta agus suimeanna daoine óga Chathair na Gaillimhe a léiriú.

I measc na mbuaicphointí tá ceardlanna déanta troscáin cairtchláir i nDabhach Uisce, Sorcas agus damhsa i Shantalla agus léiriú beo ó amhránaí agus scríbhneoirí amhrán óga Music Generation in Amharclann Mick Lally an Druid. Beidh leabharlanna ar fud na cathrach ina n-ábhar gníomhaíochta, le raon tairiscintí, lena n-áirítear ceardlann úrscéal grinn agus grafach i Leabharlann an Bhaile Bháin, agus 'Ceol, Gluaiseacht agus Marc-chruthú' do leanaí óga i Leabharlann Westside.

Den chéad uair riamh, beidh imeachtaí déanacha san oíche ar chlár na bliana seo atá deartha go speisialta do dhaoine óga idir 14-18 bliain d'aois. Cuimsíonn Cruinniú Lates 'Scratch Night' do thaibheoirí de gach cineál ealaíne—bíodh ceol, filíocht nó sorcas—agus ina dhiaidh sin 'Beats and Beyond' leagtha síos ag na DJanna óga agus iad ag traenáil.

Dúirt Méara Chomhairleoir Cathrach na Gaillimhe, Eddie Hoare, agus clár Chruinniú na nÓg á sheoladh aige:

"Is cathair bhríomhar agus éagsúil í Gaillimh, cathair chultúrtha, chruthaitheach agus chuimsitheach. Cuireann Cruinniú na nÓg le cumas cruthaitheach gach páiste agus tugann sé deis do pháistí ó gach cearn de chathair na Gaillimhe teacht le chéile chun súgradh, iniúchadh agus eolas a fháil. Ba mhaith liom gach duine a spreagadh chun a gcruthaitheacht a fhiosrú agus páirt a ghlacadh i gCruinniú na nÓg 2024 a dhéanamh in aghaidh an lae chun cuimhneamh air."

Dúirt Ambasadóir Áitiúil Chruinniú na nÓg, Sonya Naumova, damhsóir agus ceoltóir agus ball de Chomhairle na nÓg (Comhairle Óige Chathair na Gaillimhe), "Tá an chruthaitheacht cosúil le fonn draíochta a thugann áthas dúinn agus a nascann muid ar fad, is cuma cé muid féin nó cén áit as a dtagann muid."
