Five local festivals in Galway awarded government funding this summer

Five Galway-based projects have received funding through a €293,252 scheme announced this week by Minister Patrick O’Donovan. The funding comes from the Small Scale Local Festivals and Summer Schools programme, which will support events across Ireland in 2025. The selected Galway festivals focus on promoting local arts, music, heritage, and sustainable living practices.

 

Mervue man wins award at Marine Institute's Bursary Presentation Day

Sean McDermott from Mervue, a Marine Institute Bursary student, is one of eight award recipients in the 2025 programme. He and fellow student Aisling English received the Best Joint Presentation award for their work on Fisheries Sampling & Data. The Bursary Programme offers undergraduate students opportunities to build professional networks and gain hands-on experience.

 

City's first ever rain gardens thriving on Sea Road

Galway City Council has reported that the city’s first-ever rain gardens, located on Sea Road, are thriving. Installed at the junction of The Crescent and Sea Road, the two gardens were part of the recently completed Active Travel Scheme. Rain gardens are an innovative form of landscaping designed to reduce flooding and improve drainage by collecting and absorbing rainwater.

Sustainable lab certs awarded to 8 University of Galway research spaces

Eight research laboratories at the University of Galway have been awarded sustainable laboratory certifications. These certifications are part of Research Ireland’s Sustainable Laboratory Certification Pilot Programme, which was launched in 2023 to promote top-tier sustainable research practices in Irish laboratories.

 

Druid Theatre honored by An Post for 50th anniversary

Two commemorative stamps marking the 50th anniversary of Druid, one of Ireland’s most celebrated theatre companies, were presented this week at the Mick Lally Theatre in Galway.The striking pair of stamps depict scenes from notable Druid productions of classic Irish plays. The domestic ‘N’ rate stamp (€1.65) shows actors Marty Rea and Aaron Monaghan in the 2018 staging of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. The international ‘W’ rate stamp (€2.65) highlights actor Marie Mullen in DruidGregory (2020). Marie was a founding member of Druid, alongside artistic director Garry Hynes and the late Mick Lally.
