Kick The Wall in support of Galway Simon with new contactless machine from Salthill Rotary Club

The launch coincided with Galway Simon Community’s annual Steps for Simon fundraising challenge, which encouraged participants to walk, jog or run 150K in May, while raising vital funds for homelessness prevention and support services across the West.

For generations, the famous tradition of “kicking the wall” at Blackrock in Salthill has marked the end of a stroll along the promenade for both Galwegians and tourists alike. What began as a quirky local custom evolved in 2012 into a meaningful fundraising initiative developed by Galway Salthill Rotary Club in partnership with Galway City Council.

The plaque at the wall famously reads:
"When you kick the wall, make it a powerful one."

Now, thanks to the installation of the new tap machine, supporters can make quick and easy contactless donations while taking part in one of Galway’s most loved traditions.

Visitors are encouraged to simply tap to donate €3 — and they can do so once or as many times as they wish. Every contribution, big or small, will go directly towards supporting the vital work of Galway charities and for the first month will support Galway Simon Community.

Speaking about the initiative, Galway Salthill Rotary Club said the new tap machine modernises a much-loved community fundraiser while continuing Rotary’s mission of “Service Above Self.”

"Kick the Wall has become part of the identity of Salthill and Galway itself. We’re delighted to bring the fundraiser into a new era with contactless giving while supporting the incredible work of Galway Simon Community and their Steps for Simon campaign. Every tap and every step will help support people facing homelessness and housing insecurity in our region."

Galway Simon Community works across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon providing homelessness prevention, housing and health and wellbeing services for individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

The public is encouraged to support by visiting the Salthill Promenade, taking part in the beloved tradition and tapping to donate.

When you’re out walking in Salthill — kick, tap, and support.
