Galway’s Back to Winnipeg Release New Single

Galway 4-piece Back to Winnipeg released their sophomore single ‘Jeronimo’ on April 12. Find out more and listen here...

"Featuring nimble guitar playing from the Galway group Back to Winnipeg, the single is elevated by the group anthem worthy harmonies." - Hot Press

Fresh on the heels of their debut single Slowdown, Back to Winnipeg have brought forward a sequel. Jeronimo was released on April 12th and you can LISTEN HERE.

Jeronimo highlights the band’s heavier rock sensibilities. This is a grungy, murky departure from the bright surf-pop on their debut release. The single poses driving bass, noisy guitar and crashing drums. Still, the song’s catchy hook is likely to be stuck in your head hours after first listen.

Jeronimo went through a series of rewrites before reaching its final form. The song began as a narrative around its title character, a man named Jeronimo, experiencing a crisis of faith. The band were ready to scrap it until they performed that version of the song live, and found the chorus resonated enormously with audiences. That melody became the lynchpin of Jeronimo. The rest of the song now acts as a love letter to the Galway music scene – and to the people that ultimately saved the song from being forgotten.

Forming in the summer of 2022, Back to Winnipeg made their live debut at Freehouse in Galway’s Áras na nGael. It began in front of a sellout crowd, with a support slot for cult heroes of the Irish indie scene Oh Boland.

An eclectic mix of players, Back to Winnipeg are Eoghan Barrett, Cian Moran, Liam Moran and Donncha Adams.

Influences range from Britpop outfits Blur and The La’s to veteran American rockers Pavement and Queens of the Stone Age. Hooks on tracks like Jeronimo show an appreciation too for indie-pop in the style of Phoebe Bridgers or Pillow Queens. The common denominators for Back to Winnipeg are the vibrancy and dynamism that inform the group’s live show.

In just over a year, the band has cemented itself as one of Galway’s must-see live acts. Back to Winnipeg pride themselves on a DIY approach. Songs like Slowdown and Jeronimo are the product of bedroom recordings, with Eoghan Barrett deputising as an able sound engineer and producer.
