Pálás Score Busiest Weekend on Record!

Box office high...Barbie... Hi Barbie! Thanks to the already iconic double-header of Greta Gerwig’s
Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Pálás Cinema & Bar in Galway have scored their busiest weekend on record! Find out more here...

Pálás welcomed 2623 film fans over the weekend, compared to the previous record of 1524 for opening weekend in 2018. There is a common connection; Greta Gerwig’s Ladybird and Margot Robbie in I, Tonya were the main reason for the previous record!

Highlights from the weekend included the first public screenings of Oppenheimer which took place at midnight on Thursday night, along with costume parties, Drag Bingo, themed concessions and cocktails and an incredibly busy buggy valet service as Parents and Babies flocked to see Margot Robbie as the famed doll. Galway Girl Nicola Coughlan made it a family affair and popped in to Pálás on Sunday to see herself on the big screen.

The public took to the double billing with gusto donning outfits honouring either or both films, which really added to the sense of occasion. Pálás Programmer William Fitzgerald said; "We were thrilled to fire up our 35mm projector for Oppenheimer and turn our bar into Barbie's Dreamhouse this weekend. Having Irish talent front and centre in the biggest box office weekend of the year was special too – we marvelled at Cillian Murphy’s performance on screen as Oppenheimer and we’re delighted to welcome a real-life Barbie, Galway’s own Nicola Coughlan, into the cinema as well!"

Pálás want to thank all staff and audiences for coming out in force and making the cultural phenomenon that is Barbenheimer the busiest and best weekend in five years! It would not have been possible without the commitment and energy that everyone brought to the weekend.

Additional events such as Drag Brunch will be added due to demand, and four legged friends can also get in on the action with a Dog Friendly screening planned for this weekend. Other types of screenings include Parent & Baby, Silver Screen and Sensory. Of course, it's not a proper visit to Pálás without a delicious cocktail in the bar before the screening! Tickets are now on sale for all of the above screenings and events from www.palas.ie and you can keep up-to-date on all that's going on by following Pálás on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
