Located at 3 Cross Street Lower, Obsidian Arts is a custom tattoo and body piercing studio and art gallery in Galway city’s artistic Latin Quarter. Co-owned by the creative duo Debbie and Caz, the Obsidian team are specialists in their craft, ready to create the perfect piece of body art—whether it's the piercing you’ve always wanted or a custom-designed tattoo just for you.

In this edition of our Q&A with Obsidian Arts’ highly skilled resident artists, we caught up with tattooist Anna to learn more about her preferred tattooing style, the most rewarding parts of her job, and what influences her unique designs.

How long have you been tattooing, and when did you set up in Galway?

I've been tattooing for about 6 years in total. I did my apprenticeship back in Portugal for 2  years, and I have been working for the past 4 years here in Galway

Tell us about your preferred style of tattooing.

I mostly work with black designs, preferring botanical illustrations, abstract lines, and ornamental pieces.

How did you get into tattooing in the first place?

It was an invitation from my cousin, who is also a tattoo artist.

Who or what influences your work?

Nature, astrology, tribal ornamental patterns—and life in general.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Having people trust me with their bodies and seeing them happy with the projects we create together.

What has been your favourite request from a client?

Anything ornamental or abstract is always fun.

What tattoo stands out most in your mind, or which are you most proud of?

Recently I started a full back project with some flowers and ornamental details, it was quite challenging but so pleasurable to work with too.

What’s your least favourite trend in tattooing?

Cybersigilism/weird goth patterns that you can't understand what they are.

What was the first tattoo you ever got?

A pair of pin-up high heels on my wrist.

And the first tattoo you ever did?

A single line band around the calf.
