Q. Tell us about yourself.
I’m Emer Whelan, an artist based in Galway City. I work primarily with geometric forms made from laser-cut wood in my studio. I create one-off and limited-edition pieces that combine bold shapes with symbolism, drawing inspiration from feminine energy, Irish mythology and nature. All of my pieces are handmade from beginning to end in my workshop.

Q. What inspires your creativity?
I am inspired by a multitude of things, but nature is always at the centre. The changing seasons, light, and the symbolism found in Irish mythology all feed into my work. Growing up on the shores of Lough Mask, I was mesmerised by the work of Jim Fitzpatrick and the Book of Kells. From this, my curiosity grew outward.

Q. What’s your favourite thing about your job?
I cherish the freedom of creating something from nothing. It is truly magical to start with an idea in my mind and watch it slowly take shape through layers of colour and form. I also love when a piece resonates with someone else. When someone connects with a design and wants to live with it in their space, it feels incredibly special.

Q. Could you tell us about your latest collection?
My latest collection centres around a limited-edition piece called Ór, which means gold in Irish. It celebrates feminine strength and is inspired by the spirit of Irish goddesses and the creativity and resilience associated with St Brigid. Each piece is handmade and framed in oak, referencing the oak tree connected to St Brigid’s early monastery. It’s a celebration of Irish heritage, femininity, and the energy of a new season.

Q. What’s your connection to Galway?
Galway has always felt like a place that is creatively alive. There is a huge artistic energy to the city and a strong culture of art and music. I created my little family here, and I cannot think of a better place for my kids to grow up.

Q. Can you tell us about a place in Galway you think everyone should visit?
I always recommend a stroll in Salthill. Walking along the prom and taking in the sea air, especially in the evenings when you can see the sunset by Blackrock Tower, is something special. You always come across someone you know, so the chats are always great too!

Q. What time of year in Galway is your favourite and why?
Definitely the summer months. Every week there is a different festival and the city really comes alive. When you go for a stroll into town on any given day, you never know what you might come across. It’s really magic.

Q. What’s your idea of a perfect day off?
My favourite days are when we take a walk into the city to grab a tea and then wander. Usually it includes a visit to Charlie Byrne’s and Outset Gallery, then any markets that might be on, and a gander down Galway’s Westend for some amazing food and music. I love days that are unstructured - where you go with the flow and pick up friends randomly along the way.

Q. How can people find out more about your artwork?
People can follow my day-to-day work on Instagram @emerwhelanart and browse my collections at emerwhelanart.com. There, you can sign up to my mailing list where I share new releases and exclusives. I regularly offer subscribers the first opportunity to see or purchase new work, so it’s the best way to stay connected to what I am creating next.
