Galway artist Keith Wallace presents The Plassey Project on Inis Oírr

Created by Galway-based musician and artist Keith Wallace, 'The Plassey Project' recounts the shipwreck of the MV Plassey in March 1960 and the subsequent rescue of its crew by the islanders of Inis Oírr. It launches at Áras Éanna on Inis Oírr - Europe's most westerly Arts Centre - at 2pm on July 4th.

'The Plassey Project' is a soundtrack accompanied by a film as opposed to a film augmented by a soundtrack. The film elements were shot during a residency on Inis Oírr, where field recordings from the site of the shipwreck were also captured and woven into the fabric of the maritime soundtrack that was composed, played and recorded by Wallace (who makes music under the name Loner Deluxe). The film soundtrack and storytelling strands all come together to tell the mythic tale of the epic events of 65 years ago off the wild and windy west coast of Ireland.

An evocative, hypnotic and immersive experience, 'The Plassey Project' opens a portal to the past. The push and pull of the Atlantic tides are reflected in the sonic storytelling of the soundtrack - the morse code melodies, the lift and drift, the ghost ship and the gust and rust. This empty vessel makes noise.

The exhibition of this 23 minute audio-visual art-film will have its launch in Áras Éanna on Inis Oírr - Europe's most westerly Arts Centre - at 2pm on July 4th 2025, where it will be screened for two months.

This project was kindly supported by The Arts Council of Ireland, Creative Ireland and Áras Éanna.
