Clifden is a coastal town in west county Galway, located in the region of Connemara. As the largest town in Connemara, it has been dubbed ‘the Capital of Connemara.’ Its name in Irish ‘An Clochán’ means ‘stepping stones,’ aptly named as visiting it is often an important step for all those who wish to explore Connemara and the Wild Atlantic Way. Linked to Galway city by the N59, Clifden is only an approx. 1 hour and 20 minutes drive from the city centre.

Getting to Clifden has never been easier thanks to the expanded bus routes and easy-to-follow signposts. Linked to Galway city by the N59, it is only an approximate 1 hour and 20 minute drive from the city centre. Ireland’s intercity coach bus, Citylink, provides regular bus services between Galway city and Clifden also. If you are travelling from abroad, you can fly directly into Galway at Ireland West Airport and from here it is only an approximate 1 hour and 40 minute drive to Clifden town.

Known as ‘the Capital of Connemara,’ Clifden is famous for its stunning Connemara scenery, rich history, which includes the first transatlantic flight landing, a vibrant arts, festival and music scene, and a lively and welcoming community.

Thanks to its fantastic location, Clifden is the perfect base for exploring the local area. Here you can; explore the landscapes of Connemara National Park, visit the historic Sky Road for its panoramic views, and see the ruins of Clifden Castle. In town, you can visit art galleries, sit in on traditional Irish music sessions in cosy pubs, and shop at the local stores. Don’t miss out on visiting the nearby Kylemore Abbey too!
