Galway City Businesses are invited to participate in the Nice Toilet Pilot Scheme; Here’s how to get involved

Over the upcoming months, Galway City Council plans to introduce the Nice Toilet Galway pilot scheme. Inspired by successful initiatives in Germany and Switzerland, this collaborative approach between the public and private sectors aims to create a network of toilets that will be accessible to the public from early morning until late evening. If you are a business interested in getting involved, read on to discover how you can take part...

Businesses who participate in this scheme will receive an annual contribution from the council in exchange for allowing the public to use their restrooms. This approach leverages existing infrastructure, reduces the need for new construction, and ensures regular maintenance and cleaning.

Participating businesses will display a distinctive window sticker, indicating their participation and welcoming the public to use their facilities. The scheme is optional, and businesses retain the right to refuse entry.

Eligible Businesses

Businesses located in the City Centre and Salthill Village with clean, well-maintained restrooms that are accessible to the public during operating hours are all welcome to participate by completing the below steps;

1. Express Interest: Complete the online application form.
2. Assessment: We'll visit your premises to ensure your restroom meets basic accessibility and hygiene standards.
3. Join the Nice Toilet Galway City Pilot Scheme Galway: You'll receive the sticker to display in your window if approved.
4. Welcome the Public: Open your restroom to the public during your normal business hours.

Expression of Interest for the Nice Toilet Galway City Pilot Scheme

Inspired by successful European models, Nice Toilet Galway City Pilot Scheme is a collaborative initiative between Galway City Council and local businesses. The "Nette Toilette" or "Nice Toilet" initiative originated in Germany and has spread to other European countries. Its primary purpose is to address the shortage of public restrooms and improve the overall sanitation and accessibility of toilet facilities in urban areas.

This Galway City pilot scheme is a direct response to community feedback received during the Night-Time Economy (NTE) Action Plan public consultation, highlighting the need for more accessible, and clean restroom facilities in Galway City.
