The Black Gate Announce October Music & Workshop Series

Amazing things happen when you work in partnership across Galway City Arts...

The Black Gate, in partnership with Galway City Arts Office and Music Generation Galway City, presents Black Gate Beginnings, a series of youth music events and workshops taking place in October 2022, funded by Creative Ireland.

The series will feature performances from established music artists as well as opportunities for young people to attend workshops in songwriting and performance. Young songwriters and musicians from Galway will also be invited to perform their own music alongside the featured artists in this series of free-to-attend, family-friendly, day-time events. The featured artists include eclectic wordsmith Steo Wall, gaeilgeoir rapper Súil Amháin, soulful singer and composer Síomha, indie-folk songwriter Niamh Regan, Congolese guitar maestro Niwel Tsumbu and percussion legend Eamonn Cagney.

Events will be free admission and open to all but pre-booking is required. Workshops will also be free admission and open to young people aged 13-18 years old. Email musicgenerationgalwaycity@gretb.ie to book your place, as pre-booking is required.

This series is presented in partnership with Galway City Council and funded by Creative Ireland.

Steo Black Gate Beginnings

October 1st: Steo Wall

On October 1st, Music Generation Galway City will be supporting talented young musicians from the local Traveller community to take to the stage in the O'Donoghue Centre, University of Galway, following a songwriting and performance masterclass from Steo Wall, a contemporary urban-based folk artist from Dublin. Drawing on his Traveller heritage, Steo mixes folk-inspired melodies with spoken word, bringing the listener on a journey from the first note.

This workshop and live concert is presented at the Misleór Festival of Nomadic Culture.

October 8th: Súil Amháin

On October 8th, Music Generation Galway City will host a workshop and performance by North Kerry rapper Súil Amháin in the new GCC Music Centre in Galway Community College. Súil Amháin embodies West Munster lyricism with kaleidoscopic references to ancient folklore and grammar defying wordplay in Irish, delivered in accentuated patterns from traditional poetry, and flows influenced by the likes of GZA, Lord Infamous, Seán de hÓra and Mo Chara.

This masterclass in performance and live production will appeal to young people interested in making beats, rap, hip-hop, spoken word and music production.

Síomha Black Gate

October 15th: Síomha

On October 15th Music Generation Galway City will host a workshop and performance by singer and guitarist Síomha in the new GCC Music Centre in Galway Community College. Síomha dances the line between folk, jazz and neo-soul, effortlessly taking audiences on an unexpected and unforgettable journey. Her debut album Infinite Space is a cosmic, folk-informed, jazz-tinged, post-pop collection of songs in both Irish and English produced by Grammy-nominated Tyler Duncan.

This workshop will appeal to young people interested in live performance, songwriting, improvisation, music production and songwriting as gaeilge.

October 22nd: Niamh Regan

On October 22nd Music Generation Galway City will host a workshop and performance by Galway songwriter Niamh Regan in the new GCC Music Centre in Galway Community College. Niamh’s debut album Hemet announced her arrival as one of the most distinctive songwriters in Ireland today, earning nominations for both the RTE Folk Awards’ and the Choice Awards’ Album of the Year and leading to performances on The Late Late Show, Other Voices, and La Blogothèque. A natural storyteller, Regan’s songs are windows into her world, snapshots of the intimacy of everyday life exploring themes of acceptance, uncertainty, independence and ordinary acts of love.

This workshop is especially suited to young people interested in songwriting and composition.

Niwel Tsumbu and Eamonn Cagney

October 29th: Niwel Tsumbu & Eamonn Cagney

On October 29th Music Generation Galway City will host a workshop and performance by the critically acclaimed duo of Niwel Tsumbu and Eamonn Cagney in the new GCC Music Centre in Galway Community College.

Niwel Tsumbu is a Congolese-born guitarist with a virtuosic style drawing on jazz, classical, rock, folk and rumba. He has earned praise from All About Jazz for his ‘exquisite and almost seamless’ global fusion and has performed with Sinead O’Connor, Buena Vista Social Club, Rhiannon Giddens and Baaba Maal. Tsumbu’s music is anchored in his sophisticated sense of rhythm, his virtuosic guitar playing and his thrilling improvisations.

Éamonn Cagney is Ireland’s foremost hand-drum percussionist. His masterful percussion-playing and original compositions are displayed on his solo albums Convergence and Enchantment, his long standing duo with Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu, and his numerous collaborations, masterclasses and recordings. One of Ireland’s most cherished musicians, Cagney has regularly worked with diverse musicians and organisations, including Liam Ó Maonlaí, Roger Doyle, the Abbey Theatre, the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Denise Chaila, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Lisa O’Neill, John Spillane, Martin Tourish (Altan), Julie Feeney, Mel Mercier, Music Generation, Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Míchéal Ó Súilleabháin and Louis César Ewande.

This workshop will appeal to young people interested in guitar, percussion, songwriting, improvisation and performance.
