Quizzing the Quiz Master of WOMP Events

Galway’s very own Quiz Master veteran Niall Horisk has a lot up his sleeve for Galway’s events season ahead so naturally enough we had to quiz him about all WOMP Events has lined-up as well as throw him some of our own trivia questions.

Question: If there’s an event to be planned and you don’t know where to start - who are you going to call?
.
.
Answer: WOMP Events!

WOMP Events have been laying the groundwork for great night outs since 2020. They’ve years of experience under their belt in all manner of events and have earned their place in the spotlight. Looking for help in throwing a fundraiser/staff/corporate/family/wedding/divorce party? Just ask Team WOMP.

Niall and his right hand man, the other half of WOMP Events, Ronan Clancy, have prepared a killer lineup of events around Ireland for the weeks ahead so let’s check it out! Every Tuesday through May: the Common Knowledge Quiz will be hosted as usual at Galway’s The Ol '55. On May 15th, the Great Big Small Screen Quiz is making its Wicklow debut in Hardy Har Comedy Club - Bray. Later this month on May 25th, WOMP Events are making their theatre debut with Bingo-Hálainn at An Taibhdhearc. Hosted by Al Porter, this will be an interactive, bilingual, multimedia trivia night with loads of surprises. And, looking a whole month ahead, WOMP Events are returning to The Limelight, Belfast for another one of their popular Harry Stylish Club Night. They are also currently working on making their cinema debut at Pálás so stay tuned for live updates! Tickets for all these events are available HERE.

If you haven’t already spent an exhilarating night out with WOMP Events add it to your summer’s agenda asap! We’ve popped along a few times and the experience has never disappointed. The organised chaotic craic that ensues during and after each round is truly unrivalled and because there is no easy way to describe the kinds of mayhem that erupts during a WOMP quiz, you best book your table and check it out for yourself.

While you may already be familiar with WOMP Events’ quizzical guru Niall Horisk, in order to get to know the man behind the host, we decided to flip the table and ask him a few questions of our own;

Q. How do you keep the questions fresh and avoid repetition?

A. When Ronan & myself are writing our quizzes, we have a rule to never repeat a question. Mainly because if someone came to a couple of quizzes and saw repeat questions, they'd think we're lazy. More importantly, after three years of coming up with rounds to keep things fresh, it forces us to get more creative. Our most regular event, The COMMON KNOWLEDGE Quiz at the Ol' 55, enforces this rule because we have a lot of regular attendees so it pushes us to keep things fresh... and increasingly nonsensical.

Q. What are some of the best team names you've heard?

A. There are so many great ones that we see repeated often. A recent favourite is the team name my housemates chose when attending WOMP's GREAT BIG SMALL SCREEN QUIZ. In our house, it's become a regular opportunity to tease me due to my obsession with Desperate Housewives. So my housemates came to the quiz and called themselves 'Desperate Housemates'.

Q. What has been your favourite themed-night/quiz so far?

A. I love that WOMP has earned a reputation for the effort we put into our themed quizzes and that they've been so popular. Some examples: we provided handmade wands for everyone at our Harry Potter Trivia Night, and blessed attendees with unconsecrated eucharist and holy water at our Father Ted Quiz.

My first favourite event of ours was our Breaking Bad Quiz, which was actually our first themed TV quiz to not sell out. Hosting a smaller audience allowed me to give attention to each team and they all got to interact with each other. By the second half, I was walking around Massimo wearing nothing but a Walter White-esque apron and serving everyone fake crystal meth.

Q. Have you ever won a quiz before?

A. I have never won a quiz. This whole WOMP Events/hosting quizzes thing is just an elaborate ruse to make myself feel cleverer under the guise of being a "Quiz Master".

Q. While putting together questions you must come across some bizarre facts. What's one that has stayed with you?

A. This hasn't been in a quiz but I learned it today: every US President since the 1960s has had a special button on their desk that calls an aide to bring them their favourite snack or drink.

Q. What is the funniest wrong answer you've heard?

A. What was the creator of knock-knock jokes awarded? The No-Bell Prize.
