Howya Chipeen! Prátaí Relaunches Under New Name and New Look, Same Ownership, Same Spuds

A firm favourite on the Galway food scene, Prátaí, the beloved city centre ‘chip shop’, is entering an exciting new chapter with the launch of its new name, Chipeen. The name might be new, but the owners, team and service remain unchanged. The rebrand signals growth, creativity and excitement for the future without changing the foundations on which the business was built. Discover all about these new updates right here...

Owned by Galway brothers Joe and Barney Gaughan, the popular chip brand first launched in 2021 with a stall at the much-loved Galway Christmas Market. From there, the business moved to High Street before finding its permanent home on Shop Street in the heart of Galway city.

Joe Gaughan, co-owner of Chipeen, says, “While the name is changing, who we are is not. Chipeen allows us to grow creatively, add new energy and bring new menu items to our customers. We have big plans and exciting new menu items dropping over the next few months. Of course, our core staple stays the same - the humble spud.”

Over the past five years, the ethos behind the brand has centred on celebrating everything great about the humble spud — and the Irish growers behind it. With approximately 80% of chips used in Irish chip shops imported, the brothers remain committed to using fresh Irish potatoes, chopped by hand daily and twice-fried in golden Irish rapeseed oil to create the perfectly crunchy-on-the-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside chip that Galwegians have come to know and love.

Barney Gaughan, co-owner of the much-loved chip shop, said, “We have been so fortunate to work with so many amazing Irish suppliers from Drummond House Garlic to Harry’s Nut Butter, MICIL’s Poitín and Sheridans Cheesemongers. We are excited to continue growing that relationship and being creative with our new offerings. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back as Chipeen.”

Looking ahead, the rebrand to Chipeen also paves the way for exciting new developments. A new product launch is planned in the coming weeks, alongside a major collaboration set for later this Spring that will see the brand extend beyond Galway for the first time.

Chipeen will open today at noon, Monday, 2nd March. Follow the journey and see the rebrand unfold across social media at @chipeenofficial.
