Howya! Anthony Collins (Galway City Council)

Did you know that Galway is home to a diverse array of fascinating characters? This vibrant city is full of unique personalities, and we’re giving you the chance to meet some of them. Join us as we say Howya! to some of Galway's most interesting figures. This month, we had the pleasure of chatting with a true local legend, Anthony Collins, who has made a lasting impact on the community.

Tell us about yourself..
My name is Anthony Collins. I grew up in Old Mervue, and served my apprenticeship as a cabinet maker in T. O’Higgins in Shantalla. I started working in the Galway City Council in ‘99, where I am now a craft foreman. One of my hobbies is collecting vinyl records, and I also DJ at some venues around Galway’s Westend.

What do you love about your job?
I have a great team working with me, and it’s always great to see the joy on people’s faces when they move into a new home.

Favourite place for a night out in Galway + why?
The Blue Note. They have the best music, an intimate dance floor, and everyone is sound.

A place in Galway that everyone needs to visit?
Old Mervue.

Favourite piece of Galway slang?
Howya Loveen.

What time of year is your favourite + why?
Christmas, because of the vibe around Galway. The lights are pretty spectacular, everyone is in great form, the holidays, and hot toddies.

What’s your connection to Galway?
The Anthony Collins Bridge.

What makes Galway stand out in the crowd?
The people. The charm. It’s the perfect size for getting around. We have the best bars, restaurants and live music, hands down. Everyone is pure sound too.

What's the most romantic thing you've done on Valentine's Day?
Brought someone to Supermac's.

What’s your perfect Paddy’s Day?
Hiding away from the madness.

Tell us a secret..
Myself and Moodymanc (aka Danny Ward) are releasing a double sided 12-inch vinyl this spring, titled OMEV1, Old Mervue Edits Vol 1. I spent every second weekend last summer in Whalley Range Manchester, in Danny's studio. I do vocals on one of the tracks. Keith Marshall from 3345records.ie is helping out with the pressing and promotion, and Jarlath Tourish from the West End Art Collective is doing the logo.

Up Mervue.
