Museum galleries come alive after hours with immersive performances that transform the Museum space, creating a unique sensory experience where music and history intersect in unexpected and memorable ways.

From 6pm on Thursday July 30th, the exhibition spaces of Galway City Museum will be filled with the sights and sounds of a Shillelagh Martial Arts Talk & Demonstration by Nathan Featherstone (6-7.30pm), and Electronic Music by Jimmy Penguin (7-8.30pm)

Jimmy Penguin is an electronic music artist based in Galway specialising in turntables, custom records and synthesizers, Jimmy is the founder of Community Skratch, the worldwide turntablist collective, and an ambassador for turntablism in Ireland and around the world. A constant fixture of the Irish underground electronic music scene, he has amassed countless album, production and mastering credits across a range of musical aliases and bands, while earning multiple titles in international turntablist battles. He has had a lasting influence on skratch music and experimental electronic performance.

For this performance, Jimmy will use Perfect KO, the vinyl instrument he spent a decade developing before its release on Cut & Paste Records. Built specifically for turntables, Perfect KO allows him to create complete musical compositions live using turntables. This performance will focus on showcasing the creative possibilities of Perfect KO.

During these extended opening hours, visitors will be able to enjoy the museum’s rich and diverse exhibitions, spanning history, culture, and science, including Surrounded by Stone, Keepers of the Gael, Revolution in Galway, The Claddagh, Galway Hooker, Earth Action, Sea Science, and Superhuman.

Running the last Thursday of the month from 5pm to 9pm, Museum Lates invites the public to explore Galway City Museum’s exhibitions after hours while enjoying immersive musical performances talks, workshops, performances, and community events. Funded by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport ‘After Hours at the Museum’ scheme and Galway City Council.
