Midsummer Nature Day at Brigit’s Garden

Enjoy a midsummer day of free biodiversity walks around Brigit’s Garden with expert guides. A great opportunity to learn more about our vibrant local wildlife, from butterflies and wildflowers to trees and herbs. Enjoy some relaxed and inspiring time in nature and pick up tips about how to support biodiversity in your own garden or land.

Come for one walk or make a day of it with morning and afternoon sessions, with the option of the evening bat walk.

Morning: 11am – 12.30pm
How to grow wildflowers – sharing their experience from Brigit’s Garden of how to succeed with annual and perennial meadows, creating natural beauty and providing many benefits for wildlife. Lead by Jenny Beale.

Our native trees – meet some of our most important local trees and hear about their rich folklore and the Ogham tree alphabet. Lead by Carol Barrett.

All about ponds – discover the rich wildlife in and around the water in the ponds at Brigit’s Garden, with tips on how to make your own pond. Lead by Dr Martin Gammell.

Afternoon: 2pm – 3.30pm
Citizen Science Butterfly Survey – learn about our beautiful local butterflies and how to identify them. Lead by Dr Caitriona Carlin & Dr Martin Gammell.

Wild herb walk – meet some of our local wild plants and enjoy their scents, colours and textures. Learn about their beneficial properties, especially for the skin, and make a herbal skin cream to take home. Lead by Maria Buitenhuis.

How to attract bees, butterflies and birds into your garden – lots of ideas from Brigit’s Garden that you can use at home or in your communities to attract wildlife and support biodiversity. Lead by Kay Synott.

Family afternoon in the woods – enjoy fun, nature-based activities, games and eco-crafts. There will also be lots of tips for parents about activities for children in nature. For children aged 4+ with their parent(s). Lead by experienced Forest School leader Carol Barrett.

Evening: 10pm – 11.15pm
Evening bat walk – learn about these fascinating creatures and identify them using bat detectors. For adults and children 6+. Lead by Dr Caitriona Carlin.

Booking Information
The walks are for adults, apart from the family afternoon and the bat walk. There is no charge, but online registration is required. Donations to Brigit’s Garden (registered charity) are welcome.

You can also book a special participants’ lunch of soup with brown bread, a selection of chef’s summer salads, tea, coffee and biscuits for €15 (just add it to your booking on the booking page).
