Live Portrait Sketching: Sketch or Be Sketched at Galway City Museum

Celebrate creativity this National Drawing Day, an initiative of the National Gallery of Ireland, with a relaxed and engaging portrait drawing session at Galway City Museum.

Join artist Catherine Creaven for a live portrait sketching session exploring the possibilities of observational drawing from life. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced artist, this relaxed session offers a chance to practice, experiment, and enjoy the process of drawing from life in a supportive environment.

How it Works:
5- & 10-minute timed sittings
Participants are invited to both sketch and be sketched through a series of short, timed poses designed to keep the session lively and inclusive.
Sitters: Volunteer for a 5 or 10-minute pose. Catherine will ask for volunteers throughout the session.
Sketchers: Attempt to capture the likeness and character in the 5- or 10-minute timeframe.
There is no obligation to pose – feel free to participate in whatever way feels comfortable.

Catherine will begin with a short demonstration of her approach to drawing from life and will be on hand throughout the session, working along with you and offering gentle encouragement, making this event suitable for all skill levels.

This event is free of charge; however, places are limited and advance booking is strongly recommended. To book, please contact the Museum by email at Museum@GalwayCity.ie or telephone (091) 532460.
