A Modern Movement 2.5: HAVVK in the Róisín Dubh

A MODERN MOVEMENT present Grunge-fuelled indie making music about the things that keep us awake at night as HAVVK take to the stage at Róisín Dubh with support from Shark School and Vernon Jane.

New album ‘To Fall Asleep’ out March 15th.

HAVVK (pronounced Hawk) are an alternative rock band based in Dublin. Fronted by Julie Hawkʼs dynamic, soaring vocal, HAVVKʼs music steers the listener from moments of immersive shoegaze to thrashing punk rock. Their live show is equal parts confrontation and celebration, tackling topics such as bodily autonomy, gender expression, and mental health, all nestled in a bedrock of layered, distorted guitars. With early singles like ʻOnce Toldʼ confronting Irelandʼs pre-Repeal abortion laws, itʼs clear that HAVVK are an act who are unafraid to combine hard-hitting hooks with an equally hard-hitting message.

Renowned for their commanding stage presence, HAVVK have toured extensively throughout the UK, Ireland and Germany, including sold-out shows in Dublin, London and Berlin, and support slots with the likes of And So I Watch You From Afar and The Drums. The band have also made festival appearances at Electric Picnic, Kaleidoscope, Head for the Hills, The Great Escape and Liverpool Soundcity, as well as a TV performance on Other Voices (IMRO Stage).

The evolution of HAVVKʼs sound perfectly captures their eclectic influences, which they blend to lull the listener into an intricate web of reverie, akin to Cocteau Twins and MVP, before being slingshot into moments of bombastic indie-rock, similar to Sleater Kinney, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and My Vitriol. Their records and live prowess speak of an unforgettable act who are constantly pushing and merging genre boundaries to unpack the world around them.

Support from Shark School & Vernon Jane
Shark School – Shark School are a female-fronted abstract garage band based in Galway City. Beginning in June of 2023, they have quickly made a name for themselves playing with bands such as NewDad, The Love Buzz, Elaine Malone and many more, most recently playing Whelan’s Ones to Watch (even though they are Sharks to watch). They are known for their energetic sets, sarcastic wit and party vibes. Most recently they are known for making an elderly man levitate at their set for Whelans One to Watch…

Vernon Jane – From Dublin, Ireland, Vernon Jane are one of the most exciting new bands to emerge on the Irish scene in recent years. They released their debut album, The Ritual Of Love Making – a concept album about intimacy, vulnerability, aggression and shame – in the spring of 2020 to widespread acclaim. Easy listening doesn’t get a look in. Vernon Jane are a live phenomenon of extraordinary energy and power, as well as superb musicianship. Their Jazz Punk sound is influenced by the likes of QOTSA and Frank Zappa, as well as local Irish acts like Tongue Bundle and New Secret Weapon.
