Gallery Lates: Hands On Introduction to the Materials & Processes

As part of Gallery Lates join artist John Rainey for a hands-on introduction to the materials and processes behind Deviations at Galway Arts Centre.

Drawing from his studio archive, Rainey will present a selection of moulds, maquettes, test pieces and cast objects that have informed the development of the exhibition. Audiences will have the opportunity to handle and examine works that would not normally be accessible, offering a rare insight into the making of the sculptures on display.

The session will also include a demonstration of slip casting, a ceramic process central to Rainey’s practice, providing an opportunity to learn more about the technical and material considerations involved in creating the work.

Free admission with registration required HERE. All welcome.

John Rainey is a sculptor based in Belfast. He received an MA in Ceramics and Glass from the Royal College of Art (London, 2012), and a BA in Contemporary Crafts from Manchester Metropolitan University (2009). Rainey’s work has had solo presentations at Marsden Woo Gallery (London, 2013), Golden Thread Gallery (Belfast 2016) Naughton Gallery (2021) and BERG Gallery (Stockholm, 2019, 2022). His sculptures are held in public collections including the UK Government Art Collection, the Irish National Collection, the Ulster Museum, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Collection.

This workshop takes place as part of our late night programme “Gallery Lates” supported by Galway City Council and the Department of Arts, Media, Communications, Culture and Sports as part of the Galway City Night-Time Economy Action Plan.
