Creativity Workshop: Responding to Objects at Galway City Museum

Join artist Vicky Smith to respond to the Great Mace of Galway by recreating sections of this magnificent object using repoussé, a metalworking technique in which aluminium foil is shaped by using swirling techniques or pressing from the reverse side using tools to create a design in low relief. Chasing or embossing is a similar technique in which the piece is hammered on the front side, sinking the metal. You will first create a framed repoussé picture based on your drawing of the Great Mace. Then you will look at and draw the rich decorations of the Mace, such as the English rose, Scottish thistle, French lily or Irish harp. Using this traditional skill in a modern way you will transfer your drawing onto tinfoil and look at form, shape, texture, pattern, shape and lines in the symbol.

Vicky Smith is a visual artist from Galway City. Her practice is rooted in painting, and she is a painter on the Turps Correspondence Course 2024–25. She is Education Coordinator at Engage Art Studios and FET Tutor in Fine Art Drawing at Galway Technical Institute.
