Community Exhibition: The Aran Knitting Project at Galway City Museum

The multi-purpose Education Room at Galway City Museum will host an exhibition showcasing an Aran Knitting workshop series that took place in Galway City Library recently. Where experienced knitters were taught a series of traditional Aran stitches in a group environment.

The purpose of the workshops was to teach Aran Knitting as a living skill, and to build a community of knitters who could in turn share their new skills with others.

The participants used wool dyed and spun in Ireland, to create new artworks such as headbands and scarves comprising the traditional stitches. All photographs in the exhibition were created specifically for this project and this is their first public display.

The project was funded by Galway City Council, Creative Ireland, the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and Age Friendly Galway.
