Athenry Walled Towns Day 2026

Step back in time and experience the sights, sounds and stories of medieval Athenry at Athenry Walled Towns Day, from 1–5pm on Sunday 16th August 2026 at Athenry Community Park and Athenry Heritage Centre. Celebrating 20 years of this popular festival and inspired by the theme “Heritage to Protect, Europe to Connect,” the event offers an opportunity to explore one of Ireland’s best-preserved medieval towns and its links with historic towns across Europe.

Curated by Athenry Arts and Heritage Centre in partnership with Galway County Council’s Heritage Office, the programme features free activities for all ages. Visitors can enjoy medieval battle re-enactments, living history encampments, armour and weaponry displays, birds of prey exhibitions, guided walking tours, traditional arts and crafts demonstrations, music through the ages, archery, workshops, and an exhibition showcasing medieval towns from across Europe.

Families and children can discover the past through hands-on experiences and engaging displays. Whether your interest is history, heritage or family fun, Athenry Walled Towns Day promises an enjoyable afternoon for everyone.

This free community event celebrates Athenry’s rich heritage, medieval legacy and European connections, inviting residents and visitors alike to explore, learn and connect.

Funding and Support: Funded by The Heritage Council and Galway County Council, the festival is developed in partnership with Athenry Arts & Heritage Centre and supported by Athenry Community Council, Athenry Tidy Towns, and the businesses and communities of Athenry.

It is also part-funded through the Culture Programme for Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.
