With three successful events in Carlow, Limerick and Cork, it’s now time for Bangers and Crash to land in Galway and to invite participants to join them in this wonderful adventure. Up to 50 young people from Galway, are invited to join the ensemble for workshops, rehearsals, and a live performance on Sunday, November 24th in The Black Box Theatre, Galway.
Over two days (November 22nd and 23rd) the six master percussionist of Bangers and Crash will lead participants on an inspiring journey of percussive exploration, culminating in this exciting, immersive, concert experience.
Alex Petcu, Musical Director of Bangers and Crash says “We've had three great projects /concerts. It's been a lot of work as the music is also challenging for us to play, so personally, between rehearsing, performing, writing a piece, and helping to coordinate all the moving parts on the days of rehearsals, it has been busy! The children have been really, really great. Very different personalities in each place and it's exciting in a way not knowing who you'll get until they turn up. Each of the participants respond to music in a different way, so our work is to teach them a common way of communicating, build up their ability to respond quickly and accurately, and for them to lose their inhibitions! Composer Brian Irvine is really amazing at this and he's the perfect personality. His piece is a wild adventure and perfect for Bangers and Crash, as well as something really exciting for the children to be involved in. It's been a crazy adventure figuring it all out, but we've come away with three spectacular concerts that I think, surpassed our initial aims for this project. Originally the participants were just going to be involved providing some extra rhythms, sound effects, and atmosphere, but now with Brian's work, they get to play a pivotal role in the creation of a new piece of art that's different in every performance.”
This unique concert series is a captivating fusion of virtuoso performance, and collaborative participation, featuring the brand-new composition by the maestro of participatory music, Brian Irvine, conducting 50 young guest musicians in each venue: this final concert will be in The Black Box Theatre, Galway on November 24th. As well as Irvine’s new work, the concerts feature a performance of a new participatory composition by Alex. Complementing these participatory works, the repertoire also includes Music for Pieces of Wood by Steve Reich, Ghanaia by Matthias Schmitt, Catching Shadows by Ivan Trevino and Shell by Emma O’Halloran.
Brian Irvine says, “Whoever you are, whatever you play, whatever stage of learning you are at, whatever the type of music you like…come and be part of a new and wonderfully wild concoction of percussion and noise. Joining forces with the brilliant Bangers And Crash Percussion Sextet you are invited to take part in a performance of my new work Call: [I am] here! So whether you have been playing for years or just a couple of hours or if you just like the sound of a spoon hitting a radiator or the sound of bubble wrap popping...we want you to be part of our wonderful band ! Just bring your instrument or something (or things) that makes a noise and you are in the band ! All that is required is a sense of fun and an appetite for some sonic adventure.”
Led by renowned percussionists Alex Petcu, Emma King, Caitríona Frost, Brian Dungan, John Rousseau-Parlane, Paddy Nolan, and guest Patrick Lynch, the Bangers and Crash Percussion Sextet not only showcases a spectacular array of percussion instruments - including marimbas, vibraphones, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, tambourines, gongs and a vast array of drums from around the world - but also captivates audiences with their creative use of ad hoc materials like scrap metal and household materials, pushing the boundaries of sonic exploration and crafting a mesmerizing fantasia of percussion sonorities.
