Tarraing É i nGaeilge, Galway Cartoon Festival’s annual exhibition of chartúin nua i nGaeilge and Irish language events across the City and Connemara returns. Discover all about them below!

The Festival, which runs from Thursday 1st to Tuesday 6th October, marks its 10th anniversary this year. The Irish language, and its centuries old connections with satire and mischievous humour, will be very much part of the celebrations.

Tarraing É i nGaeilge will be launched on Friday 2nd October at 10am in Plámás, Upper Dominick Street, with coffee and drawing. The public can meet and sketch with Festival artists and hear details of the Irish language events of the week. Bígí linn!

The annual trip to Inis Oírr is an essential part of any Galway Cartoon Festival, while also underlining the event’s commitment to the Irish language.  The island leg of the festival starts on Sunday 4th October with the bus leaving from 1 Victoria Place, Merchants Road, at 9am, followed by the ferry trip. Booking is via aranislandferries.com. There will be Drawing aboard the boat – waves permitting.

Inis Oírr will host drawing sessions; the Festival’s artists in residence, Dean Patterson and Brady Izquierdo Rodriguez; and events, including Drink and Draw in Tigh Ned (Sunday 4th, 12.30pm - 3pm), where, again, artists and the public can have the craic and draw.

That evening (6pm to 8pm), Áras Éanna Arts Centre will host the ‘Three Island Exhibition Openings’. Every festival new cartoons in the Irish language - “Gags as Gaeilge” - are exhibited in Galway city and Inis Óirr. There will be voluntary translators on hand to facilitate full enjoyment of the works by, among others Tom Mathews, Mick O'Hara, Donal Casey, and Caoimhe Lavelle.

While on Inis Óirr, keep an eye out for Hollywood pro Joey Mason, creator of cartoons, comic books, and storyboards for major movies. ‘Where’s Joey’, starting 12.30pm is a treasure hunt! Find Joey and win a prize.
