Claddagh rings

You can’t visit Ireland, especially Galway, without hearing about the lore of the Claddagh ring and buying one for yourself. Galway is the home of the original Claddagh ring, a design displaying two hands, a heart and a crown, symbolising friendship, love and loyalty respectively. Thomas Dillons, located on Quay Street, is the original home of the ring, but there are plenty of other stores that sell a variety of different styles as well. Places such as Foxford Jewellry, Heart in Hands, and Claddagh Jewellers are all great and conveniently located throughout the city.

Aran sweaters (Standún)

Another staple of Irish fashion, the Aran sweater is a warm woollen sweater that helps you brave the elements. Despite originating from its namesake of the Aran Islands, you don’t have to travel all the way to islands for a sweater (although you should visit!), as Galway is home to a multitude of stores that sell the cosy staple. The Aran Sweater Market has a couple of locations sprinkled throughout the city and is probably the most famous, but stores such as Aran Islands Knitwear, the Sweater Shop, and Weavers of Ireland are all also high quality and accessible options.

Irish Poitín (Micil)

Or if you’re wanting something a little bit stronger, Poitín might be more suited for your taste. Often referred to as “Irish moonshine”, Poitín is an iconic Irish spirit that has deep cultural and historical roots within the country. Micil Distillery is also a great option to buy authentic Irish poitín as well as other liquor stores such as O’Briens.

Irish Whiskey (Ahascragh)

Now this is where it gets fun! Ireland is famous for its Guinness no doubt, but the whiskey here has also made quite a name for itself. Garavan’s is both a whiskey bar and shop where you can enjoy a drink and take one home with you as well; they even offer different gift sets if you are needing something to give for this upcoming Father’s Day or any other special occasions. Other options include Micil Distillery, Sonny Molloy’s or the Irish Whiskey Stone Company.

Handmade Pottery

What is more authentic than a locally made, hands-on piece of art that you can take home with you? Galway is a city of artists and creatives and has no shortage of artisans selling their authentically Celtic creations. Judy Greene Pottery is a great option, as well as Rachel Webb ceramics, or Cloonmore Pottery if you’re willing to get out of the city a little bit.
