8 Bits of Galway is a playful and visually captivating 3D mapping experience that reimagines the façade of Lynch’s Castle, one of Galway’s most iconic historic landmarks. Transforming the building into a vibrant, arcade-inspired world, the artwork draws on the visual language of classic 1990s platform games, blending nostalgia, digital creativity, and storytelling.

Through a series of short visual “levels”, the artwork offers a glimpse of Galway in an 8-bit aesthetic. By combining heritage architecture with 3D mapping, 8 Bits of Galway invites audiences to experience the city from a fresh perspective. The work celebrates Galway’s unique identity through humour, imagination, and pixelated charm, encouraging viewers to rediscover familiar urban spaces in an unexpected and engaging way.

8 Bits of Galway is funded by Department of Culture, Communications and Sport, with support from the Galway City Council Night-Time Economy and Arts Office.

About the Artist

Serhii Khadzhava is a Ukrainian media artist based in Ireland, working across immersive audiovisual installations, projection mapping, and live visuals. With over ten years’ experience, he has developed work for festivals, public spaces, and performance contexts internationally.

His practice focuses on creating visually rich, site-specific experiences that combine digital technologies with architecture, light, and sound. He has presented work at events such as Electric Picnic, Dublin Winter Lights, Westival, and Culture Night programmes across Ireland, transforming urban environments into engaging and interactive visual landscapes.

Khadzhava’s work emphasises experimentation, collaboration, and the blending of physical and digital worlds, creating memorable shared experiences for audiences.
