Celebrated on 1 May, Bealtaine was one of the four great festivals of the Celtic year. An important day in the rural calendar, it marked the beginning of summer and the movement of cattle from lowland winter pasture to higher ground. It was also believed to be a time when the door to the otherworld was ajar, and the fairies and the dead could communicate with the living. Dairy production was thought to be especially vulnerable to supernatural mischief between sunset on May Eve and sunrise on May Day, so the farming community used charms to protect their grass, animals and dairy produce.
