#Properbook: Making It Up as We Go Along at An Taibhdhearc

Have you ever dreamed of writing or illustrating for children in English or Irish? Do you have an idea for a picture book or a children’s novel? Are you looking for inspiration and practical help? Would you like advice about finding an agent or a publisher and what they are both currently looking for? This event is for you! Discover everything you need to know about the world of children’s books.

Evening’s Schedule
6.30pm: Welcome by Elaina Ryan, CEO Children’s Books Ireland and Patricia Forde, Laureate na nÓg
6.35pm to 7.15pm: Why You Should Write Children’s Books (Even Though You Are So Grown-Up and Wise*), Chaired by Sarah Webb. Siobhán Parkinson and Niamh Sharkey talk about the joys and challenges of writing and illustrating for children and young people. They will explain their writing process, describe how they create a picture book or novel from start to finish, and give writing and illustrating tips. They will also talk about why they believe that writing and illustrating for children and young people matters. W/Questions from the Floor.
*Inspired by Katherine Rundell’s book – Why You Should Read Children’s Books Even Though You Are So Old and Wise

7.15pm to 7.45pm:Samhlaigh, Samhlaigh! Imagine, Imagine!, Showcase – Patricia Forde and Dave Rudden. School, library and festival events are an important part of most children’s authors and illustrators’ lives. Patrica Forde and Dave Rudden will talk about this aspect of their creative lives and showcase a shortened version of an event that they might present for children or teenagers.

Short break

7.50pm to 8.40pm: Finding an Agent and Getting Published, Chaired by Elaina Ryan. Agent Polly Nolan, Little Island Publisher, Matthew Parkinson-Bennett and Futa Fata Editor, Róisín Adams talk to Elaina Ryan about how to submit to an agent or publisher, what agents and publishing houses are looking for, how much a children’s writer or illustrator can expect to get paid, and what their agency or publishing houses try to do to sustain Irish children’s writers’ and illustrators’ careers. W/ Questions from the floor.

8.40pm: Closing Remarks w/ Patricia Forde
