Interpreting Landscapes: Tim Robinson & West of Ireland exhibit at Bonham Quay

Edward Capital, in association with the University of Galway, is pleased to present Interpreting Landscape: Tim Robinson and the West of Ireland / Rianú Talún: Tim Robinson agus Iarthar na hÉireann, in celebration of the immense contribution that Tim Robinson made to understanding the landscape of the west of Ireland.

The majority of the images in the exhibition are drawn from the book, Connemara and Elsewhere, the result of Tim’s collaboration with photographer Nicolas Fève, as well as the Tim Robinson Archive at the University of Galway. Much of the exhibition text comes from manuscripts in that archive and from Tim’s published writings and reflections on the west of Ireland. Tim and Máiréad are no longer among us to enjoy seeing the exhibition in its new setting. Their loss in 2020 has been keenly felt by their family, friends and admirers throughout the world, but their legacy endures in many forms. The major part of their archive was generously donated to the University of Galway where it is available to view in the Library.

Tim continued to write in the years between the initial exhibition and his death in April 2020. Among those later publications were an award-winning translation of Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s Cré na Cille, which he worked on with Liam Mac an Iomaire, and his own Experiments on Reality, a collection of autobiographical essays, published in autumn 2019. His final work and collaboration with Liam Mac an Iomaire, Conamara Chronicles: Tales from Iorras Aithneach, is a translation of Seán Mac Giollarnáth’s 1941 book Annála Beaga ó Iorras Aithneach, published in 2022. The list of creative and scholarly responses to Tim’s work continues to grow and many a person takes pleasure in following the paths he traced in his books and maps. His nephew, John Drever, continues to work to perpetuate the Robinsons’ memory.

The present exhibition, launched ahead of Culture Night 2024, is a tribute to the life’s work of Tim and Máiréad Robinson. Through their shared passion for, and knowledge of, the West of Ireland they have left a legacy that will endure for generations
