Illustrated Talk: Traditional Traveller Homes – Form, Function & Folklore at Galway City Museum

Travellers, or Mincéirí, are a traditionally nomadic ethnic minority indigenous to the island of Ireland. Their colourfully decorated wagons, sheltering against stone walls and hedgerows on the sides of the road, were a common sight on the outskirts of Irish towns and villages from the 1920s to the 1970s. They have come to symbolise the traditional Traveller way of life.

Join Oein DeBhairduin, Traveller Culture Collections Development Officer with the National Museum of Ireland, as he discusses the journey from loban/tents to wagons and more modern accommodations – while including form, functions, and community folklore.
