Illustrated Talk: The Origin of the Gael as revealed by their DNA at Galway City Museum

The early historical peoples of Ireland, known as the Goídel and later as the Gael, are first recorded in Welsh and Irish texts from the 7th century. They spoke a Celtic language called Goídelc. However, Gaelic traditional historians offer a different perspective on their origins. According to the Book of Invasions (Lebor Gabála Érenn), the legendary figure Goídel Glas is considered the direct ancestor of the Gael. Born in Egypt to Scota, the daughter of a pharaoh, Goídel earned the nickname Glas (meaning ‘green’) due to a green mark left by a venomous snake bite. He was healed by Moses, who foretold that he and his descendants would settle in a land without snakes. Goídel Glas is also credited with creating the Irish language by blending elements from the seventy-two languages spoken at the time. The Book of Invasions further recounts that around 1000 BC, the sons of Míl of Spain, a descendant of Goídel Glas, arrived in Ireland.

Join Dr Tyrone Bowes as he discusses how and what DNA can tell about the origins of the Gael, using examples as evidence. Dr Bowes, an experienced biotechnologist with a passion for history and geography, is the founder of Irish Origenes, which carries out DNA case studies. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session.
