Clann Miotlantach/Mythlantics Exhibition Launch at Galway Arts Centre

Galway Arts Centre are delighted to announce Clann Miotlantach / Mythlantics, a solo exhibition by Alice Rekab. All are welcome to join its the Opening Reception at 6pm Friday 28 March, Galway Arts Centre (Artists Talk with Alice Rekab 5pm)

Alice Rekab is an Irish Sierra Leonean artist based in Dublin. Rekab takes their identity as a starting point to examine the intersection of personal and shared historical and cultural narratives. They trace fragments of their mixed-race experience through body and mind, geographies and politics.

Rekab makes sculptures, expanded paintings, digital collages, and films. The artist draws from photographs and objects found in their family archive and during their trips to Sierra Leone, and employs materials such as clay, mirrors and wood.

This exhibition engages with the histories of the Atlantic Ocean as a site of migration. It treats the water as a terrain of mythological recovery that encapsulates stories common to Irish and Black people. The featured works generate a symbolic lens by which to imagine a ‘mythatlantic family’, and address themes of familial relationships, diaspora, and sense of place and belonging.

This exhibition is produced by Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork in collaboration with Galway Arts Centre as part of a nationwide tour, funded by the Arts Council. It is curated by Miguel Amado, director of Sirius Arts Centre.
