Cinema Book Club: The Colour Purple at Pálás Cinema

A story of love and resilience based on the novel and the Broadway musical, THE COLOUR PURPLE is the decades-spanning story of Celie, an African American woman living in the American South during the early 1900s.

Director Blitz Bazawule (Beyoncé’s Black Is King) has created a fiery reclamation of a film. A remarkable tonal departure from the book and its polarizing 1985 Spielberg adaptation, this version of The Colour Purple is an energetic spectacular, blending the styles of Broadway musicals and Hollywood studio movies. Without sacrificing emotional stakes, Celie’s world is opened up with ensemble musical numbers, with a mix of gospel, pop, blues and ballads, giving a sense of a bustling Black community that exists beyond Celie’s suffocating life with her cruel husband, Mister.

Starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Louis Gossett Jr., Jon Batiste; and Fantasia Barrino in her film debut, reprising her role as Celie from the the stage musical.

Cinema Book Club and Cúirt have joined forces for a unique monthly film/book club in Galway, curated and hosted by Cúirt International Festival of Literature in Pálás.

Each month, Cúirt selects a book-to-film adaptation to watch in our cinema and then, in true Cinema Book Club style, they host a discussion afterwards in the Pálás bar. Read the book, then join Cúirt for the film and a discussion.

Great chats, great people and great fun on the third Thursday of every month!

Just show up on the night and join in. Everyone is welcome, even if you haven’t read the book.
