Ciarán MacChoncarraige’s ‘Galway Vignettes’ Photo Exhibition at Town Hall Theatre

Lasta Festival presents; Ciarán MacChoncarraige’s ‘Galway Vignettes’ Photo Exhibition at Town Hall Theatre, running from May 31st to June 18th with a launch on Thursday June 6th at 6pm.

Ciarán MacChoncarraige is a photographer from Galway, whose work explores themes of nostalgia, memory, and place. His street photography is abstractly documentarian, often blurring the lines between the aesthetic properties of photography and painting. He is a recipient of the 2023 Agility Award from the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon, and is currently exhibiting a solo show entitled “Found Paintings” in The Stop Galway. He has also participated in group shows in Hang Tough Contemporary, Outset Gallery, and TØN Dublin. He is a member of ÍOVA Collective.

This series of 8 images is a selection of work from the early stages of Ciarán’s practice – namely the first months of his exploration of street photography in his hometown. Vibrant colour and geometric composition, tightly focused images with an emphasis on detail; this series attempts to document Galway, while omitting some of the more obvious aesthetic cues of the city. Ciarán had been hugely influenced by street photographers based in London and New York in his formative months, so to some extent he tried to imbue these images with a big city feeling; one that has persisted in informing his practice.
