Caomhnóirí an Talún Exhibition launches at Tuam Library

The exhibition by Kathy Ross, which runs from September 19th to October 4th, explores themes of Celtic and Norse mythology, focusing on animals reclaiming their environments in the face of Climate change.

The exhibition features a series of 12 Linocuts prints, showcasing Ross’s unique artistic style and her deep connection to mythological stories.

This is a marked change in Kathy’s artistic technique and style. Having spent the last four years focusing on textile art and embroideries, the artist has returned to her roots in printmaking to create this new body of work.

Ross’s work draws a poignant parallel between ancient myths and contemporary environmental issues. In Norse mythology, the tale of Ragnarok describes a series of catastrophic events, including the Fimbulwinter, a harsh winter that leads to the end of the world.

Similarly, Ross’s art portrays animals like foxes, hares, elks, ravens, and wolves reclaiming their environments after the devastation of climate change. These creatures, central to both Celtic and Norse mythology, symbolize nature’s resilience and the possibility of renewal even after great upheaval. By linking these ancient stories to modern-day environmental challenges, Ross emphasizes the timeless connection between humanity and the natural world.

The official launch event will take place on Saturday, September 21st at 3pm at Tuam Library. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the artist and gain insights into the inspiration behind her work.

“I wanted to create a body of work that not only celebrates our rich mythological heritage but also highlights the urgent need for environmental conservation,” said Kathy Ross. “Through these stories and images, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the natural world and its incredible resilience.”
