99th Day with Gerry McGovern

Join a Community Conversation at the Mick Lally Theatre as part of a national tour across Ireland marking the launch of 99th Day: A Warning About Technology, the widely acclaimed new book by journalist and former technology insider Gerry McGovern.
Described by critics as “essential reading for anyone who cares about our planet” and “a dispatch from the edge of a collapsing world,” 99th Day is a powerful, deeply researched examination of the environmental, social and civic consequences of Big Tech, AI, data centres, extractive mining and the so-called “green transition.” The book cuts through comforting narratives of innovation and progress to reveal the material realities beneath them : land destruction, waste, dispossession and democratic exclusion.

Written from lived experience inside the tech industry and informed by investigative research and Indigenous perspectives, 99th Day argues that the crises we face are not only environmental or technological, but profoundly civic. It asks who gets to decide our technological future, who benefits, who bears the cost, and what it means to be a good ancestor in a time of accelerating ecological breakdown.
This Galway event is intentionally participatory. Rather than a one-way talk, the evening will be shaped as a shared conversation space : combining readings, facilitated conversation and open dialogue. Audience members will contribute their wisdom, feeling and reflections, helping to collectively explore how we as a community respond to the unfolding crisis and how we begin shaping our future together.

Why attend?
At a time of accelerating crisis and constant noise, this event offers space to slow down and think clearly. 99th Day challenges easy narratives of progress and invites audiences into a deeper conversation about responsibility, care and collective action.
This event is free to attend, with an optional donation at booking.
Presented in partnership with Tonn na Clé : A Grassroots Movement in Galway & CAIM :Communities Against the Injustice of Mining, the evening reflects a commitment to grassroots civic engagement, environmental justice and community-led dialogue.
