Dr. Naomi Lavelle, also known as Dr. How, will then introduce her amazing hands-on science show, Dr. How’s Science Wows, giving you the opportunity to take part in some marine science experiments which is sure to be fun for all the family.

If that wasn’t enough, Ronaldo Fanzini will perform some jaw-dropping antics all in the name of family fun and entertainment in his comedy circus show, Ronaldo Fanzini, King of Mayhem.

Visitors can also visit the SmartBay Virtual Tour allowing users to navigate around a full 360° tour of the SmartBay facilities. The tour features incredible panoramic views of Galway Bay, from the Marine Institute Headquarters in Rinville to the Shore Station in An Spidéal, and takes the viewer on a remarkable sub-sea virtual experience of the Observatory itself.

Speaking about the event, Alan Berry, Manager of Marine Research Infrastructures, Marine Institute said; "We are very excited to welcome the community of An Spidéal to the SmartBay Family Fun Day 2023 and are looking forward to engaging with all our guests on the importance of marine observations. The SmartBay Observatory is situated 1.5km off the coast of An Spidéal and is unique as Ireland’s only underwater cabled observatory, one of only three in Europe, providing access to continuous marine monitoring and observations 24/7."

The SmartBay Observatory continuously monitors and transmits live data from beneath the waters of Galway Bay and is freely available online. These data are vital in monitoring the marine environment and contributing to national and international oceanographic monitoring programmes. The Observatory hosts an underwater camera, that streams live video footage from 20 meters depth and is available to view via www.smartbay.ie where the Virtual Tour can also be accessed. The SmartBay Observatory is part of Ireland’s national marine research facilities and is the Irish component of the European Multidisciplinary Seafloor Observatory (EMSO) research infrastructure.
