IRISH LANGUAGE NOMINATIONS CLOSING SOON
The closing date for Gradam Sheosaimh Uí Ógartaigh nominations, is Friday February 21 at 5.30pm. Don’t miss the opportunity to be part of the longest running award of its kind in Ireland!
If you are interested in using the Irish language or wish to increase the use of Irish in your business or organisation, this is the award for you! Organised by Gaillimh le Gaeilge, there is no cost to enter and you can nominate your own business or another business for the award. To enter, simply fill in the application form, available online HERE, or pick up a physical copy at Gaillimh le Gaeilge’s office on Flood Street.
Gaillimh le Gaeilge was established with the aim of promoting the Irish language, particularly as an economic resource, in the Galway area. Gaillimh le Gaeilge works in association with Galway City Council, Galway Chamber and other groups in the city to promote Galway as a bilingual city.

Speaking about the Gradam process, Cathaoirleach Ghaillimh le Gaeilge, Bernadette Mullarkey said: “Our message to any business or organisation who is considering entering this year is téigh ar aghaidh agus tabhair faoi – go for it! You have two months to prepare as adjudication takes place in April. So there’s a very busy and exciting time ahead for all – táimid ag tnúth go mór leis!”
Businesses and Organisations registered in Galway City can enter one of four categories: Retail, Hospitality & Tourism, Services or Other Companies. A winner will be chosen in each category and the overall winner will be selected from the four category winners. The team in Gaillimh le Gaeilge will provide advice and free translations wherever necessary throughout the process. They will examine the various possibilities in terms of the use of Irish in your business or organisation and they will put together a multi-step programme with an agreed timeframe.
Gradam 2020 was launched by Uachtarán Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, an tOllamh Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh at an event in NUIG inJanuary. At the launch, an tUachtarán announced the sponsors for the year ahead and welcomed a new sponsor of the Service category, Video Sherpa. Media sponsors The Galway Advertiser, TG4 and MOLSCÉAL are also on board, as well as sponsors for each category with Galway Bay FM (Retail Category), Fáilte Ireland (Tourism and Hospitality Category) and NUIG (Other Companies Category). The Gradam sculptures that each category winner will receive were supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta, and the Galway Chamber are also providing sponsorship to the overall winner. The total value of the sponsorship for Gradam 2020 is over €23,000.
