Triple Bill: Magdalena Hylak, Mary Nunan, John Scott at the Black Box Theatre

Three exceptional solos from three of the most experienced performers in the country, for one night only!

Magdalena Hylak, Galway Dance Artist-in-Residence, has curated a unique contemporary dance triple bill. From the fulfilled silence of Mary Nunan’s Slant, to the lyrical approach of John Scott’Heroes, through the experimental proposition of Magdalena Hylak’s A Dance, this Triple Bill brings together exceptional solos from three of the most experienced performers in the country. Presented for one night only in the Black Box Theatre, Galway on Saturday 23 March.

Magdalena Hylak | A DANCE
Magdalena’s dance work can be described as raw, repetitive, highly physical and emanating from within. A DANCE is a site specific, non-story based, improvised performance, which invites the audience to a new form of ritual made from repetition, high physicality, loudness, sound glitches and noises. Hylak is working with the belief that dance is rooted in human existence and that there is no confusion in the public perception of a choreographic work. With live sound by Lionel Kasparian.

John Scott | Heroes
Heroes is a powerful and utterly unique dance/opera performance, thrillingly delivered by choreographer, dancer and operatic tenor, John Scott. Scott uses the universe of German operatic heroes: Beethoven’s ‘Fidelio’, Wagner’s ‘Die Walkure’ and ‘Siegfried’, Weber’s Der Freischutz. Scott, who has studied and performed with voice/dance pioneer Meredith Monk, creates a journey that is a dance physicalisation of music, through the physicality of his astonishing voice, to show two selves, human and mythological. The music portrays heroes battling impossible dark forces and conquering darkness paralleled with the idea of escape. Heroes is framed through interaction with Jonathan Burrows’ collaborator, Matteo Fargion.

Mary Nunan | Slant
Mary Nunan’s Slant revolves around a woman who wants to tell us something. But she has to come at it sideways: to tell it slant. She tells us. Slipping between speaking and moving she lists all the ‘things’ her dance is not about. Not. Stripping, stripping, stripping away. Everything. No. Not her clothes. She finds something. She tells us. A palpable no-thing which is not nothing. A no-thing that is not nothing. Not nothing. She dances with it.

Dance Triple Bill is a part of the Galway Dance Artist Residency Scheme from The Arts Council, with the support of the Town Hall Theatre, in partnership with Galway County Council, Galway Arts Centre and Galway Dance.
