Photography Workshop – Mirror, Window, World with Donal Kelly at Outset Gallery

Outset Gallery is delighted to present the next workshop in a series of events focused on engagement, information, and education.

This particular workshop & masterclass will focus on a B&W analog photography process and a dive into practical and technical skills needed to plan, compose, capture, and process images through both digital and analog mediums, with a view to developing cohesive projects.

The workshop will be led by Donal Kelly, an accomplished photographer who is currently having a solo exhibition in Outset Gallery.

Workshop Outline:
The workshop will begin with a short presentation on the artist’s practice and discussion of the work in the exhibition and how they were created.
This will lead to a more hands-on introduction to the photographer’s essential camera kit, containing both analog and digital cameras. During this, the tutor will explain key fundamentals of photography such as controlling exposure via aperture, shutter speed and ISO, demonstrating the use of a light meter, lens choices, and using other tools such as a tripod.
With this knowledge, participants will be invited to join a local ‘’Photo Walk’’ and take photos with their own camera and/or try out an uncommon camera provided by the tutor, such as a classic medium format film TLR, a compact 35mm camera, or a classic SLR. The artist will demonstrate his approach to looking for subjects, and creating a long exposure.
The course will conclude back in Outset Gallery, where the focus will move to editing workflow, the print, and the process of selecting and curating selections as a body of work grows.

The workshops at Outset Gallery are designed with a limited number of spaces in order to ensure that each participant receives valuable one-to-one attention from the tutor and is able to benefit the most from the course. Participants will be encouraged to get involved in discussing different topics as they arise and describe their own practice.

Note: Bringing your own camera is encouraged but not necessary; each section of the workshop will involve demonstration and discussion, with examples of cameras brought along to inspect.

*A lunch break will be given.
