Memory Myth and Make Believe: A Workshop with Niamh Swanton at Outset Gallery

Explore memory & myth through journaling and staged photography in a full-day creative storytelling art workshop with artist Niamh Swanton.

A full-day creative workshop, Memory, Myth & Make Believe, led by visual artist Niamh Swanton. This immersive session is ideal for artists and curious creatives of all levels who are eager to explore the intersections of memory, cultural narratives, and imaginative storytelling through journaling and staged photography.

Workshop Overview:
In this unique workshop, participants will uncover ways to transform personal memories, myths, and dreamlike imagery into evocative visual art. Inspired by Swanton’s playful and emotionally resonant photographic practice—currently exhibited as part of It’s All a Bit of Fun (Until Somebody Gets Hurt)—the session invites you to engage with storytelling, symbolism, and visual experimentation.

What to Expect:
Guided Creative Exercises: Begin the day with reflective journaling, visual prompts, and group discussion to tap into personal narratives and symbolic imagery.
Artist-Led Techniques: Niamh will share insights into her process—blending humour, catharsis, and dream logic—and demonstrate techniques for constructing visually compelling photographic scenes.
Staged Photography Practice: Participants will explore the basics of staged photography, building simple sets and experimenting with symbolic props and composition to bring their stories to life.
Creative Reflection & Collaboration: Throughout the day, participants will have the opportunity to share ideas, receive feedback, and learn from each other in a relaxed, supportive environment.
Final Showcase: The workshop concludes with an informal sharing session, allowing participants to reflect on their creative process and present their work-in-progress or final outcomes.

Additional Information:
Materials: Some materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring personal items (photos, objects, costumes, props) that relate to their own memories or stories.
Refreshments: Please bring your own lunch and snacks.
Registration: Spaces are limited to ensure a personalised experience—early booking is recommended.
