John Murry at Róisín Dubh

John Murry was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1979 and adopted into a branch of a family distantly linked to William Faulkner, an odd biographical footnote for a songwriter whose work feels closer to Southern fiction than tidy Americana. Early years marked by undiagnosed autism, strict religion and evangelical “rehab” shaped the sensibility long before they became subject matter. After a formative period working with cult songwriter Bob Frank in Memphis, he moved to San Francisco and made The Graceless Age with Tim Mooney, earning widespread acclaim. Murry later settled in Ireland, making A Short History of Decay and The Stars Are God’s Bullet Holes. Now back in Mississippi and preparing a new album, he returns to Ireland in 2026 with his full band.
