A Modern Movement #13

A Modern Movement is bringing Galway/Mayo NERVES for a show in Galway, with Dublin’s Clay Pigeon Shooting, Corks Cardinals & Ballina’s YOP.

The Artists.
NERVES
Nerves are a Noise Rock / Post-Rock band from Mayo and Galway. They combine elements of Post-Punk, Noise, Goth and Techno to create a powerful, ear splitting sound with confessional spoken word / shouted lyrics and samples, repurposed to reflect the themes of their music. Their live performances are energetic, unpredictable and almost always deafening.

Clay Pigeon Shooting
Pulling from elements of shoegaze, noise, and art-punk, clay pigeon shooting are a five-piece outfit based in Dublin City. Consisting of frontman Aaron Lawlor, guitarists Brian Briggs & Luke Kavanagh, bassist Max Keating, and drummer Darragh Groome, the band have cultivated a distinctive soundscape in blending corrosive vocals with ethereal, winding guitar lines, creating a dynamically abrupt and dense sonic personality. Lawlor acting as a mouthpiece, the band’s sound irately barks at their distrust for a country and a culture that ostracises its own creatives. Harsh sounds of a city reflected in their harsh and abrasive sound, clay pigeon shooting are a doubtless insight into the lives of young people in Ireland today.

Cardinals
Cardinals are a 4 piece rock outfit from County Cork, made up of Euan Manning (Vocals and Guitar), Oskar Gudinovic (Guitar and Keys), Aaron Hurley (Bass) and Darragh Manning (Drums). Providing volatile riffs juxtaposed by profound lyrics, the recent addition of a third guitarist (Kieran Hurley) amplifies the shoegaze sound of the band, creating intense, wall of sound live performances.

YOP
Yop are a DIY krauty-psychey-noisey-dancey-punky 2 piece with a drum machine. They band was conceived in the minds of Conor and Sid, 2 ageing Ballina Punx, in 2016. But due to the usual other commitments (Shithatt, Gummidge, Cancrusher) in their minds it remained for another 3 years. When eventually they got jamming regularly the first months were spent figuring out how to play without a drummer. When asked why this diversion from the usual band line up Conor said, “We’re trying to explore different avenues, keep it interesting. For me it gets boring if I’m playing the same music year after year after year after year.” By late 2020 they were ready to play live and have since gone on to play at Spilt Milk in Sligo, Ar Imeall fest in Galway, the Ballina Fringe and the 2022 edition of the infamous GGI fest. Their first single, Beyond Being, was released last September, receiving national (An Taobh Tuathail) and international (Wrong Speed Radio) airplay. And described by the online music blog No Transmission as “both fetching and rewarding.” Next up they plan to release a full EP in the first half of 2023, accompanied by the usual run of live dates around the country.
