Depaor Architects and Pálás Cinema Win Riai Award In Dublin and Gaga In London

Pálás cinema designed by dePaor Architects have won two prestigious awards over the weekend with the Royal Irish Institute of Architects in Dublin and the Galvanizers Association in London on Friday 9th June.

DePaor architects were awarded the best cultural / public building award for Pálás cinema in Galway. The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland supports and regulates the architectural profession and promotes the value that architecture brings to society for everyone’s benefit. There were 44 finalists and 14 awards on the night.

Galvanizers Association is the source of free information and advice about hot dip galvanizing and the galvanizing industry. Pálás and dePaor architects won the galvanizing in detail award. Galvanized steel was chosen in Pálás for its texture and colour, flat against the west of Ireland sky. It is good with limestone and concrete and it weathers to a soft grey and chimes with street furniture. There were 40 projects shortlisted across the UK and Ireland and Pálás and dePaor architects were the only winner in 2019 in the republic of Ireland.

On winning the awards Tom dePaor said that he was ‘Very pleased to see that the Pálás has been acknowledged as a major new public building for the city of Galway’.

Katie Walsh the GM of Pálás cinema said ‘Pálás is a tribute to the culture, creativity and curiosity that Galway and the people embody. We are delighted for dePaor architects and Galway to have this building and its detail recognised.’

Pálás is a three screen arthouse cinema and cultural space in the UNESCO city of film- Galway. Designed by Architect Tom de Paor, Pálás is a concrete monolith, five storey over double-height basement housing a three-screen independent cinema, a beautiful bar and restaurant for you to enjoy with your fellow film-lovers. It occupies the garden of a reinstated 1820s merchant house.

Throughout the building you will discover 22 beautiful resin-coated windows designed by Irish artist Patrick Scott.
