Fishy Fun Festival Planned For May: the Connemara Mussel Festival returns

It’s a three day food festival that celebrates the native mussel, now in it’s 13th year, the Connemara Mussel Festival (May 4th – 6th) has announced another jam packed weekend of festivities, ideal for foodies and families alike.

While the festival was originally established to promote the excellence of the mussels of Killary Harbour, it has now grown to become a celebration of local people, food, culture and heritage, and is recognised as the premier food event for Connemara, attracting visitors from near and far.

Tastebuds will be tickled as there is once again an exciting schedule with something for all the family to experience and enjoy. Some of the main culinary highlights include demonstrations, with renowned chefs from all over the country participating. Add to this a theatrical performance by Curlew Theatre Company titled ‘The Loves of Lady Gregory’, an art exhibition featuring the work of Connemara-based artists, a children’s story telling competition, talks on beekeeping, a dawn seashore foraging trail and guided walk exploring the unique beauty of the Connemara landscape, and you have yourself a very exciting weekend ahead! Renowned photographer and chef Cliona Prendergast of Lens and Larder will also be demonstrating at the event in the marquee on Sunday.

Mussel Festival

In the evenings the local pubs will offer traditional music and dancing. Tthere will be a Poitin tasting event on the Saturday night of the festival, followed by live music.

We welcome locals and visitors to Tullycross to come and spend the day with family and friends, feasting, dancing and celebrating seafood from our local waters.”

The economic benefit of aquaculture and fisheries in the Irish Sea is important to the Irish and economy with a value of €196 million annually.The Connemara Mussel Festival is an important festival promoting the area and the natural produce on it’s shores.
